E-mentoring Technology
Student Mentoring 2006 | Site Designed by itech Design
We want all our e-mentoring programmes to be successful and in order to ensure communication will not be hindered by the distance between the student and mentor we use the following technology:

Communication Tools

Monitor Student Mail: Educators can view and control student email activities.   This means that all mail being sent and received can be approved by a member of staff prior to the student receiving it.

Integrated Email Filters: Student messages are automatically scanned for profanity and other inappropriate content, and labeled accordingly.

Email Access Levels: Limit communication to within the classroom, school, district, just the mentor or have it open to the Internet.

Virus Scanning: All incoming and outgoing email attachments and shared files are checked and viruses are blocked.

Spam Filter: Stops delivery of messages from known "spammers".

Instant Language Translation: Click to translate email, discussion board postings or other text, to improve communication within diverse communities and enrich foreign language learning.

Spell checker: Email includes a built-in multilingual spell checker.

Searchable Address Book: Store and sort contacts, for access from school and home.

Discussion Boards: - students and teachers can have joint or separate forums for debates and research.

File Sharing & Storage: - course work and any other information can be shared.

Email Broadcasting: - The ability to contact one individual or all participants

Global Community: - access to a global classroom that has 4.7 million users and over 100,000 schools communicating in 136 different languages.

Manuals & Tutorials: - full online support and intuitive training materials.

What is COPPA and is this technology compliant?

COPPA is the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, an act passed in 1998 in the United States. It defines rules concerning the online collection and use of information from children under the age of 13. Similar legislation exists (or is being developed) in other countries. To ensure that parents are aware of the information collected from children and the communications tools to which they'll have access, ePALS recommends that schools or districts obtain written consent from the parents of any children who will be using ePALS SchoolMailTM.

What is CIPA and can this technology be used to achieve compliance?

CIPA is the Children's Internet Protection Act. Schools seeking funding from federal programs in the United States, notably E-Rate, must comply. ePALS SchoolMailTM includes built-in technology protection measures, including filtering and "human" monitoring, to help schools and districts comply with CIPA's guidelines regarding "safe and secure use by minors of direct electronic communications."

What is FERPA and can this technology be used to achieve compliance?

FERPA is the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Schools seeking funding from federal programs in the U.S., must ensure that student information is handled in adherence with FERPA's stipulations. ePALS SchoolMailTM is diligent about maintaining the privacy of student information; as such, its use can easily be in accordance with FERPA compliance.
